Chicken Karahi Recipe

Chicken karahi (Urduچکن کڑاہی‎), or kadai chicken, is a dish from Pakistan noted for its spicy taste; it is also notable in North Indian cuisine. The Pakistani version does not have peppers (capsicum) or onions whereas the North Indian version uses capsicum. The dish is prepared in a karahi that is Wok.It can take almost 30 to 50 minutes to prepare and cook the dish. It can be served with naan, roti or rice. This dish is one of the authentic dish of Pakistani cuisine.

My family loved it. My favorite ingredient in chicken karahi is green chili but today I didn’t have that but if you have some, finely slice them and add in it. This recipe is surely not healthy, you can see the name BUTTER CHICKEN KARAHI. That means it is cooked in lots of butter and please do not skip this part or you will not get the perfect taste 🙂 .Also I used canned tomatoes because these are easy to cook in a recipe like this.

Ingredients

  • Whole Chicken with bones  800 g
  • Oil  1/4 cup
  • Butter  3-4 heaped tbsp
  • Canned Tomato  1/2 cup or 200 g
  • Garlic finely chopped  1-1/2 tbsp
  • Salt  1 tsp or as required
  • Red chili flakes  1 tsp
  • Coriander powder  2 tsp
  • Garam masala powder  1 tsp
  • Black pepper crushed  1/4 tsp
  • Lemon juice  1 tbsp
  • Ginger 3 inch piece

Heat a wok add oil and butter.

Add in chopped garlic, stir few seconds. We do not need any colour on it.

Add in chicken and stir on high heat.

Keep cooking on high heat almost for 15-20 minutes.

After 20 minutes you will see colour on the chicken like shown in the picture and we exactly need this. If you feel your chicken is burning in between then reduce the heat a bit but make sure your chicken has this fried colour on it before adding any spices.

Now add julian cut ginger (save some for garnish) coriander powder, red chili flakes, garam masala powder, salt and lemon juice.

Stir and cook on high heat again for 2-3 minutes. The idea is to fry this julian ginger and spices. But be careful do not burn the spices. If you feel they are burning then add some water and keep cooking.

Now add canned tomatoes.

Stir and cook for 1 minute.

Now reduce the the heat to low, cover and cook it for 10 minutes.

Sprinkle crushed black pepper and julian ginger and chiaken karahi is done 🙂
