Red and Golden Lentils, also known as Dal, are a tasty and healthy way to add protein to your diet. Rich in complex carbohydrates, iron, potassium and zinc, this ancient staple of Indian cooking is an excellent source of nutrients that are essential for our overall health. Not only do they provide us with incredible benefits but they can also be prepared in a variety of ways to suit anyone’s taste buds.

Packed full of vitamins such as thiamin, folate and magnesium these lentils are great for helping to reduce cholesterol levels while providing our bodies with energy throughout the day. A bowl of red or golden lentils cooked up in the traditional Pakistani style makes a delicious side dish or main course that’s sure to satisfy even the pickiest eater.

Dal Serving Suggestions

For added texture, serve the dal with some freshly steamed rice or naan bread. To round out the meal, add some vegetable dishes—such as sautéed okra or braised eggplant—or include chutneys or raita for dipping. If you’re looking for an extra kick of flavor, top with fresh cilantro leaves and diced onions sprinkle with lemon juice. Do not forget to make a spicy and sour tomato onion salad with this Dal recipe.
